Swags

7 products

Canvas swags from 23Zero and Duke, sized 900 to 1600. A swag rolls out in a couple of minutes, carries its own high density foam mattress and handles a cold night on its own, which is why it suits one or two people moving campsites. The range covers the 23Zero Dual in three widths, the Duke 1600, the Outbreak 1550, a Raven side awning and Nikwax proofer to keep the canvas working.

  • Sizing, the number is the width

The number is the swag's width in millimetres. A 900 is a roomy single, an 1100 gives room to roll over, a 1400 is sized for a double and the Duke 1600 measures 2350mm long by 1600mm wide, which takes adults and kids. Buy on how much you move in your sleep, not on how tall you are.

  • The canvas

The 23Zero Dual range uses a 400gsm proofed poly cotton canvas with fully seam sealed twin needle stitching and a welded PVC bucket floor. Canvas breathes, which is why a swag does not wet out with condensation the way a cheap synthetic does, and it is why it lasts decades rather than seasons.

  • Already a complete bed

Each swag carries a 70mm high density foam mattress inside, so it rolls out ready to sleep on with no mat required. That is the difference against a tent, where the bed is something you build from the sleeping bags and mats separately.

  • Keeping it going

Canvas loses its proofing with sun and age, and Nikwax Tent and Gear Solarproof restores water repellency and adds UV protection. Clean and dry the swag first, because proofer will not bond to dirty canvas. Store it dry or it will go mouldy, which no proofer fixes.

Common questions

What size swag should I get?

The number is the width in millimetres. A 900 is a roomy single, an 1100 gives room to roll over, and a 1400 is sized for a double. We stock the 23Zero Dual in 900, 1100 and 1400, plus the Duke 1600 at 2350mm long by 1600mm wide and the Outbreak 1550.

Does a swag come with a mattress?

Yes. The 23Zero Dual range carries a 70mm high density foam mattress built in, so it is ready to sleep on as it rolls out. That is the main practical difference against a tent, where you supply the mat or stretcher yourself.

Is a swag warm enough on its own in winter?

The canvas and the built in mattress do a lot, because you are off the ground and out of the wind. You still need a sleeping bag rated for the conditions inside it. A swag is shelter and bed, not insulation.

How do I stop a swag going mouldy?

Never pack it away wet, and that is the whole answer. If you have to roll it damp, unroll and dry it fully within a day or two. Re-proof the canvas when water stops beading, and store it loosely rather than compressed.
