The small tools that make a camp work. This is a short, deliberately practical range: Coghlan's back packer and pocket trowels for digging a cat hole away from camp, and Coghlan's waterproof matches that still strike after a wet day. Small, cheap, and the things people wish they had packed.
Trowels
A back packer or pocket trowel weighs almost nothing and is the difference between doing the right thing away from camp and water, and not. Both Coghlan's models pack flat into a side pocket and neither needs looking after.
Fire you can rely on
Coghlan's waterproof matches strike and stay lit after being wet, which a lighter will not reliably do in wind or cold. Worth keeping a box in the vehicle as a backup to whatever you normally use, alongside the camp cooking gear.
What else you will want
This range is small on purpose. Tent pegs, mallets and guy ropes live with the tents, and lighting and cutting tools sit in their own sections. The full camping range is the place to start if you are kitting out from scratch.
Common questions
Why carry a trowel when camping?
To bury waste properly, at least 15 to 20 centimetres down and well away from camp and any water. It is a legal requirement in many parks and simple courtesy everywhere else. A pocket trowel weighs almost nothing.
Are waterproof matches actually better than a lighter?
In wet and cold they are, because a disposable lighter struggles in wind and its gas pressure drops in the cold. Waterproof matches strike and keep burning after a soaking. Carry both and use whichever works on the day.
Where are the axes, shovels and tent pegs?
Tent pegs, stakes and slide rails sit with the tents, since that is where people look for them. This section is the small carried tools. If there is something specific you want, ring the store on (02) 6921 6300 and we will tell you what is on the floor.
