Compound bows from a $79.99 junior set through to a $999.99 field ready kit, almost all of them supplied as a complete package rather than a bare bow. Hori-Zone and Dragon are the two names here, and the thing that matters across the range is adjustability: most of these bows cover a wide span of draw length and draw weight, so one bow follows a shooter as they grow or get stronger. You can draw one on the floor at Baylis Street before you commit.
Junior and youth sets
The Hori-Zone Farsight Junior Compound Set at $79.99 is the first bow for little kids. The Hori-Zone K-9 Youth Set at $179.99 is the one that lasts: 16 to 25 inch draw length and 8 to 28 pound draw weight, both adjusted with an allen key and no bow press needed. The Hori-Zone Sparrow 30lb at $399.99 is an entry level bow for a young archer who is past a toy, fully adjustable, built for target and supervised shooting rather than hunting.
Ready to shoot packages
A package means you can shoot the day you buy it. The Hori-Zone Mamba at $599.99 comes with a 3 pin fibre optic sight, stabiliser, 5 arrow quiver, wrist sling, peep sight, string silencers, a fitted nock set with D-loop, five carbon arrows, a release aid and a bow bag. The Vulture Deluxe at $699.99 comes in 55lb black or 65lb camo with arrows and screw in tips. Spares and upgrades are in bow accessories.
Field and hunting weight bows
The Dragon X8 at $449.99 is the wide adjustment bow: 18 to 31 inch draw length, 0 to 70 pound draw weight, 310 feet per second IBO, 30 inch axle to axle, 6.6 inch brace height, CNC machined 6061 T6 aluminium cams and a BCY string, with a 70 to 80 percent let off. The Hori-Zone Air Bourne 70lb Field Kit at $999.99 is 31.5 inch axle to axle with a 7 inch brace height, 20 to 30 inch draw, 40 to 70 pound and 80 percent let off, right hand, with a 4 pin sight, whisker biscuit rest, Dead Stop suppressor and peep already fitted.
Arrows, points and targets
Packages ship with carbon arrows, and then you need your own. Arrows carry the shafts and fletched sets, broadheads the hunting points, and the field points for practice live alongside them. Targets covers the butts and faces to shoot into, which is the part people forget until the arrows are in the ground.
Strings, cables and setting up
Strings stretch and serving wears, so strings and cables are a consumable on a bow you shoot often. Adjusting draw weight and draw length on these bows is an allen key job, but changing a string or a cable on a compound needs a press. The rest of the gear, recurves, crossbows and cases, is in the archery section.
Choosing a compound bow
What draw weight should I start on?
Start lower than you think and look at the adjustment range rather than the headline number. A bow you can hold steady at full draw teaches you form; one that is too heavy teaches you to flinch. The K-9 youth set covers 8 to 28 pound, the Mamba 35 to 55 pound, and the Dragon X8 runs from 0 right through to 70 pound, so there is room to move up as you get stronger.
How do I work out my draw length?
It is set by your frame, not your preference, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a new bow shoots badly. Every compound here adjusts across a wide span, 18 to 31 inch on the Dragon X8, 20 to 30 inch on the Air Bourne and Mamba, 16 to 25 inch on the K-9 youth set. Come in and we will measure it and set the bow to it.
What does let off actually mean?
Let off is how much of the draw weight the cams take off you once you are at full draw. At 80 percent let off, a 70 pound bow is holding about 14 pound while you aim, which is what lets you hold steady and pick your shot. The Dragon X8 runs 70 to 80 percent, the Air Bourne 80 percent.
What comes in a ready to shoot package?
Typically a sight, an arrow rest, a stabiliser, a quiver, a wrist sling, a peep and D-loop fitted to the string, a release aid, a handful of carbon arrows and a bow bag. The Air Bourne field kit also adds a string suppressor and a whisker biscuit rest. Check the listing, because the junior sets are a simpler kit than the field bows.
Will one bow last a growing kid?
That is exactly what the youth sets are for. The K-9 adjusts 16 to 25 inch of draw and 8 to 28 pound with an allen key and no bow press, so it follows a child through several years instead of being outgrown in one season. The Sparrow adjusts the same way at the next size up.
Do I need a bow press?
Not for the adjustments you will make day to day. Draw weight and draw length are allen key jobs on these bows, and the K-9 states no press is required. You do need a press to change a string or a cable, or to fit a peep properly, so bring the bow to us for that. Bow sales carry our standard bow policy.
