  • Folding or fixed?

    A folding knife goes in a pocket and is the one you actually carry, which is why it does most of the work. A fixed blade has no pivot to fail and cleans easily, which is why it is the choice for skinning and camp work. Most people who use a knife properly end up owning both.

  • Hunting and processing

    Skinners, caping knives and gut hooks in fixed blade, with sheaths and pouches to carry them safely. Blade shape matters more than length here, and a shorter blade is usually easier to work with than a long one.

  • Multitools

Common questions

What knife laws apply in NSW?

In NSW you need a lawful reason to carry a knife in public, and hunting, fishing, work and camping are recognised reasons while self defence is not. We sell to over 18s only. Check the current NSW legislation, since it is your responsibility, not ours.

What steel should I look for?

Stainless resists rust and suits wet work and fishing. High carbon takes a keener edge and holds it longer but will spot if it is not dried and oiled. Neither is better in the abstract, it depends on whether you will look after it.

How often should a knife be sharpened?

Steel or strop it often and sharpen it rarely. A few passes on a steel before each use keeps an edge for months; grinding a new bevel every time just wears the blade out. Guided systems hold the angle if you are not confident freehand.
