Hard shell rooftop tents from 23Zero for 4WD touring, from the lightweight Onyx Razor to the Onyx GTX 1400 and the Onyx Triple X in 1300, 1450 and 1550 widths. Each one is an aluminium shell over 320gsm canvas with a foam mattress, an anti condensation layer under it, 12V USB charging and built in LED lighting, and each packs down to a closed shell on the roof rack. The choice comes down to weight, width and how you want to get in.
Picking a model
The Onyx Razor is the light one: about 59kg and 110mm high when closed, so it suits wagons, utes and vehicles where roof height matters. The Onyx GTX 1400 uses a high lift rear X frame for more headroom, a forward entry and a 2.3m telescopic ladder. The Onyx Triple X raises the rear on a third hinge, so you can sleep with your head at either end, and it comes in three widths.
Weight and your roof rack
Closed weights run from about 59kg for the Razor to 79kg, 84kg and 89kg for the Triple X 1300, 1450 and 1550, and 84kg for the GTX 1400. The figure that matters is the dynamic roof load rating for your vehicle and your rack, which applies while you drive and has to cover the rack as well as the tent. The static rating, for when you are parked and sleeping, is higher. Check both before you choose a model.
Mattress width and condensation
The Triple X mattress is 2050mm long and 1200mm, 1330mm or 1430mm wide depending on the model, 80mm thick, with a fitted airflow mat underneath. The GTX 1400 has a 70mm egg crate memory foam mattress at 2000mm by 1200mm on a 10mm 3D mesh underlay, and the Razor a 50mm memory foam mattress at 2030mm by 1230mm on a 3D mesh underlay. The mesh lets air move under the mattress so moisture does not sit against the shell overnight.
Weather, power and light
All five use 320gsm canvas. The Triple X runs self deploying window canopies and a detachable skylight rain fly with 360 degree ventilation, while the GTX and Razor use a four pole surround fly, an internal blackout coating and automotive grade weather seals. Every model has 12V power with USB-A and USB-C, and the GTX and Razor add an Anderson plug and a heater and air conditioning port.
Awnings and the rest of camp
A rooftop tent pairs with vehicle awnings for shade at ground level. The 23Zero Onyx 270 covers 13.5 square metres, and the Falcon Xtreme has a rear rooftop tent access opening. Round out the setup with swags for anyone sleeping on the ground, stretchers and bedding, and the rest of the 23Zero gear or camping gear.
Choosing a rooftop tent
Should I buy a hard shell or a soft shell rooftop tent?
A hard shell opens and closes faster, sits lower and quieter on the roof, packs away dry in the rain and lets you leave the bedding inside. A soft shell folds out to more floor space and is usually lighter and cheaper. Every rooftop tent we stock is a 23Zero aluminium hard shell.
How heavy is a rooftop tent?
Our range runs from about 59kg for the Onyx Razor to 89kg for the Onyx Triple X 1550. The Triple X 1300 is 79kg, and the Triple X 1450 and the GTX 1400 are both 84kg. Add your roof rack to that figure when you check it against your vehicle.
Will my roof rack take a rooftop tent?
Check the dynamic roof load rating for both the vehicle and the rack, and use the lower of the two. That rating applies while you are driving and has to cover the rack and the tent together. The static rating applies when you are parked and covers the people sleeping in the tent, and it is higher than the dynamic figure.
What size rooftop tent do I need?
Go by mattress width. The GTX 1400 is 1200mm wide and the Razor 1230mm, both sized for two adults. The Triple X 1300, 1450 and 1550 have mattresses 1200mm, 1330mm and 1430mm wide, so the 1550 is the roomiest. Every mattress is around two metres long.
Do rooftop tents get condensation?
Breath and damp gear condense on a cold shell, and the water collects under the mattress. All five tents put an airflow layer under the mattress to stop that: a fitted airflow mat in the Triple X, and a 3D mesh underlay in the GTX 1400 and the Razor. Opening the vents on a cold night helps as well.
Can I run an awning with a rooftop tent?
Yes. The GTX 1400 has twin T-slot channels for mounting awnings and brackets. The 23Zero Falcon Xtreme awning has a rear rooftop tent access opening with a waterproof zip, and with the Onyx 270 the advice is to set a good rainwater run off angle so water does not pool at the tent entry.
