Tents

18 products

Family domes, hiking tents and the pegs and poles that hold them up. The tent range runs from a two-person Hi-Country Dargo hiker through Coleman Instant Up four and six person domes to the Cockatoo GIBSON 6V, with a TAS Multicam bivvy at the light end. Coleman, Hi-Country, Cockatoo Camping, Supex and Tasmanian Tiger, on the floor at Baylis Street in Wagga Wagga.

  • How many people does it really sleep

Rated capacity assumes shoulder to shoulder with no gear inside, so drop the rating by one or two for real comfort. A six person dome suits a family of four with room for bags. The Coleman Instant Up comes in four and six person, the Cockatoo GIBSON is a six, and the Hi-Country 4V Camper is a four.

  • Instant up or conventional poles

An instant up tent has the poles pre-attached and goes up in a couple of minutes, which matters when you arrive after dark. A conventional pole tent packs smaller and lighter, which matters when you are carrying it. The Dargo hiking tent is the one to carry; the Instant Up is the one for a site.

  • Pegs, poles and guy ropes

Steel pegs for hard Riverina ground, Coghlan's stakes for softer soil, and Supex slide rails if you are building off a tarp or awning. The pegs a tent ships with are rarely the pegs it needs. They sit with the camping tools.

  • Tent or swag

A canvas swag rolls out in minutes, carries its own mattress and suits one or two people moving campsites. A tent earns its keep when there is a family, gear to keep dry, or a week in one spot. Either way the sleeping bags and mats go in separately.

Common questions

What size tent do I need for a family of four?

A six person tent is the comfortable choice for a family of four, because rated capacity assumes no gear inside. Four person works if you pack light or use a separate awning. We carry Coleman Instant Up in four and six person and the Cockatoo GIBSON 6V dome.

How long does an instant up tent take to pitch?

A couple of minutes with two people, because the poles are already attached and you extend the legs rather than thread anything. A conventional pole tent takes longer but packs smaller and lighter, which is the trade you are making.

Are the supplied tent pegs any good in hard ground?

Usually not. Most tents ship with light wire pegs that bend in dry, compacted Riverina ground. Steel pegs or screw-in pegs hold far better and cost very little, and we stock both separately.

Can I waterproof an older tent?

Yes. Canvas and polyester both lose their proofing over time, and a proofer restores water repellency and adds UV protection. Clean and dry the tent first, since proofer will not bond to a dirty fly.
