Socks

Work socks, boot socks, merino and bamboo, plus liners and waterproof socks for wet country. The range is stocked to go with the work boots and hiking boots on the floor in Wagga Wagga, which is the way most people buy them: boots and socks together, fitted at the same time. Brands run Bamboo Textiles, Wilderness Wear, Merino Treads, Swanndri, Humphrey Law, DexShell and Trailblazer, from $9.99 a pair up to a waterproof trekking sock.

  • Work socks and boot socks

The socks that go in a steel cap for ten hours. Bamboo Textiles Extra Thick in a 3 pack at $49.99, Swanndri Universal Boot Sock V2 in a 3 pack at $44.99, and Heavy Duty Work Socks 3pk at $12.99 for a rotation you do not think about. Thick cushioning is the point here: it cuts foot fatigue and takes the rub out of a stiff boot. Fit them with the work boots rather than after.

  • Merino and wool

Merino regulates temperature rather than just insulating, so it works in a frosty Riverina morning and again in a warm afternoon. The AD Wagga Merino Terry Sock is a 75% merino blend at $24.99 in black and khaki. Wilderness Wear Pathfinder is 75% pure Australian merino with 25% nylon, three quarter height, high cushioning and a reinforced heel and toe, made in Australia. Merino Treads Hike Sock is 75% merino, flat knitted on the sides to cut bulk across the foot, also Australian made and owned.

  • Bamboo and everyday

Bamboo is the one people come back for. The fibre is naturally breathable and antibacterial, which is why it handles a long day better than cotton. Bamboo Textiles Extra Thick is 92% bamboo with 8% elastane at $19.99, with a crew sock, a business sock and a sport ped in the same family for work shoes and the gym. Trailblazer Thick Terry at $9.99 is the cheap workhorse.

  • Hiking, wet and cold

DexShell Trekking Waterproof Socks use a Porelle waterproof membrane with a merino lining and full terry loop cushioning from heel to toe, mid calf, $89.99: the answer for creek crossings and wet grass when you are not changing boots. Polypropylene liners at $19.99 go under a wool sock to move moisture off the skin, and the thermal wear and boots and shoes sit alongside for a full cold weather setup.

  • Compression, alpaca and health socks

For people on their feet all day or travelling. Trailblazer Bamboo Compression at $19.99 in 3-7, 7-10 and 10-13. Humphrey Law Alpaca Blend Health Socks are made in Australia with a non tight elastic top, $34.99 plain or $27.99 striped, and alpaca fibre traps warmth without the bulk of a thick wool sock. The rest of the mens and work clothing is in the one place.

Choosing your socks

What do the sock size numbers mean?

They are the span of Australian shoe sizes the sock fits, not a sock size of their own. Bamboo Textiles runs 4-6, 6-10 and 10-14. Wilderness Wear Pathfinder runs 3-8, 7-11, 11-14 and 12-15. The AD Wagga merino sock uses Small 4-6, Medium 7-10 and Large 11-13, and Humphrey Law uses S, M and L. If you sit on the join between two spans, take the larger one for a thick sock and the smaller one for a thin one.

Merino, bamboo or alpaca, which should I pick?

Merino for cold and for smell, because it regulates temperature and does not hold odour. Bamboo for warm weather and long shifts, because it is the most breathable of the three and naturally antibacterial. Alpaca for genuine warmth without bulk, which is why it suits a dress shoe or anyone who finds thick wool socks tight. None of them is best in the abstract.

Will thick socks make my work boots too tight?

They can, which is why you fit boots wearing the sock you will actually work in. An extra thick bamboo sock or a three quarter terry pile takes up real room in the boot. If you already own the boots and they are snug, go to a standard crew weight rather than sizing the boot up.

Are waterproof socks worth it?

They are if your feet get wet and your boots cannot be changed: creek crossings, wet grass, a long day in the paddock. The DexShell trekking sock has a Porelle membrane that blocks water from outside while letting sweat escape, so it is not a plastic bag on your foot. If your boots already keep water out, a merino sock and a spare pair is the cheaper answer.

What is a sock liner for?

A liner is a thin sock worn under your main sock. It moves moisture off the skin and takes the friction instead of your foot, which is the usual way to stop blisters on a multi day walk or in new boots. The polypropylene liners come in a 2 pack and add almost no bulk.

Do compression socks help on long days?

They help with the ache and swelling that comes from standing or sitting still for hours, which is why they get used on shift work, long drives and flights. They are not a performance upgrade and they will not fix a boot that does not fit. Bamboo compression gives you the graduated fit without the heat of a synthetic.
