  • Compound or recurve?

    A recurve is the simpler bow, easier to maintain and what target and traditional shooters start on. A compound uses cams to hold most of the draw weight at full draw, so it is steadier to aim and is what most hunters shoot. Draw weight and draw length matter more than brand on either.

  • Arrows and broadheads

    Arrows in fibreglass, alloy and carbon, matched by spine to your draw weight rather than bought on length alone. Broadheads in fixed and expanding for hunting, field points for practice. Get the spine wrong and nothing else you do will group.

  • Practice and targets

    Foam block and layered targets, paper faces and stands, so you can shoot at home between club days. Field points only into foam blocks, since broadheads will destroy them in a few shots.

  • Service and repairs

    Bow setup, string fitting and repairs are done in store. If something is not grouping and you cannot work out why, bring the bow in rather than buying parts at it.

Common questions

What draw weight should I start with?

Start lighter than you think. A draw weight you can hold steady for thirty seconds is worth more than one you can barely pull, because form is what builds accuracy. Compound bows in the range are adjustable, so one bow covers a span of weights.

How do I know which arrows suit my bow?

Arrow spine is matched to your draw weight and draw length, not to your height. An underspined arrow flies unpredictably no matter how good the release is. Bring your bow or its specs in and we will match the spine.

What is the difference between fixed and expanding broadheads?

Fixed blades have no moving parts and are the more forgiving choice out of a lower poundage bow. Expanding heads open on impact and fly closer to a field point, but need enough energy behind them to open reliably. We stock both.

Can you repair or restring a bow?

Yes, bow repairs and string fitting are done in store at Baylis Street. Strings stretch and serving wears, so a bow that has shifted its point of impact often needs servicing rather than new sights.
